Drill rig arrives at N.L. port for safety investigation

CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, N.L. -- An offshore drilling rig has been towed to a port in eastern Newfoundland as an investigation continues into an industrial accident last month.

The Henry Goodrich arrived at Conception Bay South on Sunday.

On Aug. 23, a hydraulic cylinder fell 12 metres to the rig floor.

No one was injured, but a spokesman for the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board has said if the 2.4-metre long cylinder had hit someone, "it could have caused a fatality."

The board says the rig can't resume operations until the board's chief safety officer signs off.

The semi-submersible rig is being used by Husky Energy to drill a development well at North Amethyst, a satellite of the White Rose offshore oilfield.
