Innovative Online Career Fair Brings Job Seekers and Employers Together

10/10/2012

With the help of online technology, skilled job seekers across Canada will now be able to connect directly with employers looking to fill high demand positions in Canada’s oil and gas services sector – all from the comfort of their own homes.

The Oil + Gas Services Online Career Fair, to be held on October 16 and 17 by the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada, will include all the features of a traditional career fair, only online. Job seekers will be able to learn more about the oil and gas services sector from industry experts, stream presentations and videos by employers, chat directly with employers and other job seekers, visit the online job board, download company brochures, upload their resumés and even apply for jobs. The online career fair will be a valuable addition to the many online resources already available to job seekers through the www.careersinoilandgas.com website.

The fair will be geared towards hiring for Canada’s oil and gas services sector – the petroleum industry’s largest employer including seismic, petroleum services and drilling and completions services. The need for labour in the services sector only represents part of the labour shortage challenges facing the entire industry as a whole. The services sector alone will need a minimum of 5,500 new workers by 2015 to fill positions due to industry growth and age-related attrition. Many companies have a need for specific workers – truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, oil and gas well drillers, servicers, heavy equipment mechanics, welders and engineers.

“The Oil + Gas Services Online Career Fair provides a win-win opportunity for employers and job seekers,” says Cheryl Knight, CEO and Executive Director of the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada. “For employers, the fair is a cost-effective and innovative way to find the skilled labour they need and might not have been able to access before, like workers on EI or the underemployed. Meanwhile, job seekers will be able to target their efforts and connect directly with employers who are looking for workers.”

"Alberta's thriving oil and gas sector offers a wide variety of rewarding careers," says Dave Hancock, Minister of Human Services. "We are pleased to be partnering with the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada to help more unemployed and underemployed Albertans and Canadians explore these exciting career opportunities."
