NSCC ready to provide training for Daewoo
3/11/2010TRENTON – Hundreds of help wanted signs will soon be posted as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering gears up to revitalize the defunct railcar manufacturing plant in Trenton.
So, to smoothly move this well-oiled machine forward the Nova Scotia Community College plans to connect with the South Korean manufacturing giant in an effort to ensure appropriate training can be provided locally to people filling those positions.
"This announcement is fantastic news for Pictou County," said Shelley Ballantyne, manager of business development for NSCC for the region.
She said when any new company comes to town the NSCC communicates with them to see if there are gaps in training that need to be filled.
"At this point we are in very exploratory stages of conversation with DSME," said the manager. "The college has indicated to DSME Trenton Inc. we are willing and ready to support this new venture with whatever training we have the capacity to provide.
"We would like to see what they need and what we can do to match it."
This will be Daewoo's first manufacturing facility in North America, and the company is reported to be interested in building more than just wind turbine components in Trenton. It is also said to be interested in manufacturing offshore oil and gas platforms, and potentially tidal turbines.
"In the past, the college has added new programs to meet employers’ needs and we would be open to exploring that with DSME, if it is something they require," she said.
